Japan’s Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011 stoked fear of nuclear power. Germany accelerated plans to close its old reactors and phase out the rest by 2022. In Italy 94% voted in a referendum against plans for new nuclear power plants.

So is fear of radiation justified?

Prof. Geraldine Thomas studies the molecular mechanisms involved as thyroid cancers are produced. She says that
• low dose radiation is all around us and that our bodies are equipped to deal with it
• the radiation received from Cs-137 around Fukushima in 20 years is not more than that obtained from a common CT scan.
• a coal-fired power plant can emit 3 times the radiation of a modern nuclear plant and the health effects of climate change will be far more than those resulting from the use of nuclear power .
