Reselling season tickets isn't as simple as you may think, and there are several pitfalls you need to be aware of before making the plunge into investing in season seats.

Stick around for an example of the dangers of reselling season tickets when I do a deep dive into my Pittsburgh Pirates season tickets that i've held since 2014!

1) The Seats Matter. Like anything else in the world, location and price are key. However, it isn't always as easy as finding the perfect seating location and buying them for reselling. Each team and league will have their own pricing structure, as well as availability for their season tickets. As a result, older season ticket holders may hold an advantage over a new reseller since many of the best seats both in terms of location or price may be sold out already.

2) The Team Matters. What league is the team in? What city do they play in? Are they even competitive? All of these questions play a very big role into whether you'll be able to turn a profit or not on reselling your season tickets because they can all have an oversized impact on the profitability of those season tickets. A team in a small market could potentially have an edge since the team is the only big market attraction in town, or it could mean they aren't popular at all...

Teams in different leagues also command different types of customers and are made up of different types of ticket buyers so even if you're an expert in one type of league, it may not translate directly to another since seating locations and sought after areas likely differ between each league.

Lastly, if the team isn't in a playoff hunt, it's possible you can see those profits evaporate extremely fast...or worse, you could have a team that makes the playoffs all the time, thus increasing the per ticket cost of season tickets across the board after several years, making those margins even tougher. Don't get stuck buying season tickets to a team that will suck your money dry!

3) Being Local Matters. I've mentioned this many times before, but being local as a season ticket holder looking to resell tickets is key if you want to make money reselling those tickets. When you're not local, it can become very difficult trying to move tickets as you cannot create those long-lasting relationships with customers in the area. As a result, you must compete online with other ticket resellers, both local and far, and this means lower prices and higher fees. I'm not saying you can't make money reselling season tickets by not being local, but it just makes the ability to do so much more difficult!

4) Being A Broker Matters. If a team catches you reselling season tickets, one of two things can happen.

1 - They may increase the price of your season tickets since you're reselling your seats for profit instead of using them as a fan. In this situation, it's very easy to see your ticket prices increase anywhere from 25% to 50%+ depending on the league and team you're purchasing tickets for. This can eat into your already tight margins, making it almost impossible to turn a profit in the future. However, this isn't even the worst fate...

2 - The team may simply cancel your season tickets and you're left with nothing. Holding onto tickets during the down years with the hope of making a profit in the good times may all be for nothing if the team decides they no longer want to sell you season tickets anymore.
