The Australian Associate Editor Eric Johnston says there have been no “discussions about discipline” in the nation's spending strategy.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers delivered the mid-year budget update on Wednesday, revealing a $27 billion deficit for this financial year and no expected return to balance for the next decade.

“There’s no discussions about discipline,” Mr Johnston told Sky News Australia.

“Dollar in, dollar out – there’s no discussion around that.

“It’s time Australia fronts up to the idea about the level of spending that we’re doing … at some point, we need to be putting some structure and framework around this spending strategy as well as revenue strategy.”
