An echocardiogram is an ultrasound scan of the heart that uses transmitted sound waves to create images of the heart's structure and function. During the test, a transmitter sends ultrasound waves that bounce off the heart and produce echoes, which are displayed as images on a screen. There are different types of echocardiography, including transthoracic (through the chest) and transesophageal (through the esophagus). The most common form is the 2D echocardiogram, which shows the heart chambers and their movements in two dimensions. Other modes include M-mode (time-motion), which provides precise measurements of heart structures, and Doppler studies that assess blood flow and pressures inside the heart. Color Doppler further helps evaluate valve function by color-coding blood flow, allowing detection of valve narrowing, leakage, or abnormal connections between chambers. Echocardiography offers a non-invasive, quick (5–10 minutes), and detailed alternative to older invasive catheter-based pressure measurements, making it an essential tool in diagnosing and managing heart conditions.
