The Tigray war ended with a peace agreement in November 2022, but displaced people still face dire living conditions. Nearly 1 million displaced residents in Tigray remain unable to return home due to safety and economic hardships.

The war involved Ethiopia’s National Defense Force, Eritrean troops, and Tigray People’s Liberation Front fighters. Displaced individuals, like Birhane Tafere, have lived in IDP camps for over four years, enduring miserable conditions.

Authorities are accused of prioritizing power struggles over returning displaced people to their homes. Militants and Eritrean forces controlling parts of Tigray hinder the safe return of displaced individuals. IDP camps face severe shortages of food, medicine, and essentials, with deaths reported among vulnerable populations.

Opposition party Salsay Weyane Tigray blames regional and federal governments for neglecting displaced people's suffering. Eritrean forces have not withdrawn from Tigray's border areas, delaying the resettlement process. About 600 displaced individuals from Badme have died due to a lack of food and support.

Tigray’s interim administration plans to return displaced people but needs $2.1 billion in funding and political support. UN agencies and stakeholders have been approached for financial assistance to facilitate resettlement efforts. Despite government promises, there has been no tangible progress in resettling the displaced population.
