Several hundred thousand dollars over budget (in 1950s dollars), only partially completed and late arriving by one year, Gilroy was a large scale catastrophe even for Gary. Because the initial phase of the project went so far over budget, getting additional funding to complete the job was out of the question and Gilroy would remain forever unfinished.
Despite getting off to a rocky start with taxpayers, the stadium was essential to the community and served its occupants dutifully through the 1950s and 60s.
Some events are still held on the property, but by and large, this rusted relic from a long lost civilization has been abandoned; a white elephant in one of America’s blackest cities. Today, 53 years after its debut, Gilroy rests in ruin – a crumbling calamity left to die a long, lonely death.
