In this clip from the Load Bearing Beams podcast episode 124 about the movie CATCH ME IF YOU CAN (2002), Matt and Laci discuss the real Frank Abagnale. This movie, about a con artist, is a victim of one of his cons. But so were most other people. Abagnale's 1980 memoir is a near-complete fabrication. He never did the things he claims he did... and of course he didn't, when you think about it. He successfully practiced pediatrics for a year without anyone noticing? He was an assistant attorney general?

The reality is disappointing, but it points to a very interesting aspect of media and culture, which is that nobody really wants to look into whether the fun stories we hear are actually true.

Even Steven Spielberg, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Tom Hanks seem to be completely unaware of Abagnale's lies. And indeed, his lies have been called out by reporters and critics going back to the late 1970s. His easily debunked claims had been easily debunked, and the evidence was there for anyone who cared to look.
