Gateway to Arabic Book 2, Lesson Fifteen: The Definite Article: "The" (Al)

Описание к видео Gateway to Arabic Book 2, Lesson Fifteen: The Definite Article: "The" (Al)

Unlike in English, the Arabic word for ‘the’ (al) joins onto the noun it defines rather than being written separately. When the noun begins with a moon letter, the laam of the ‘al’ is written with a sukoon and is pronounced. Defined nouns must lose their final tanween and take a single vowel instead.

When joining the Arabic word for ‘the’ (al) to a noun beginning with a sun letter, the laam of ‘al’ does not take a sukoon and it is not pronounced. Instead, the first letter of the noun takes a shadda and is therefore stressed.
