Tripura: Youth arrested for using racial slurs against traffic cop in Agartala

Tripura Police arrested one person after registering a case under the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, and other relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita after a video showing a group of youth hurling racial slurs at an on-duty traffic constable surfaced online. The incident, which took place on Friday at Netaji Chowmuhani in Agartala, gained widespread attention after the video went viral on social media.

In an official statement on the West Tripura District Police’s social media handle, the department confirmed the registration of a case under West Agartala PS Case No. 2024 WAG 117, U/S 132/351(2)(3)/3(5) of BNS and Section 3 (1)(r)(s) of the Scheduled Castes & Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. The police also assured strict action against those involved while requested public cooperation.

The altercation occurred between two traffic police officers and three youths after the youths allegedly violated traffic laws. The group reportedly threatened the officers with consequences if any legal action was taken. One of the accused also claimed ties to the "Bike Bahini," a term used for a group of motorbike-riding miscreants allegedly involved in political violence, particularly during the tenure of former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb.

The traffic constable, Madhuharu Molsom, held a peaceful protest (Dharna) in front of the Swami Vivekananda Maidan on Saturday, seeking justice for the racial abuse. Additional SP West Tripura Dhruba Nath intervened and assured him of strict action.

Officer-in-Charge of West Agartala Police Station, Paritosh Das, confirmed that one person, identified as Deep Datta, has been arrested, and efforts are underway to locate the others involved in the incident.
