How to stop your horse jumping flat with Kirstin Kelly. This video covers one of my favourite exercises. It is safe and simple and so effective. When your horse jumps flat, it is generally a weakness in his strength or balance or possibly a lack of schooling. By building a high armed X for him to jump, it teaches him to respect the jumps and back off the front rail himself. We always want the horse to respect the jump himself rather than be held off by the rider. By trying to hold the horse off the front rail with your hands, makes the horse jump hollow, tense and without care. To stop your horse jumping flat, the rider needs to create a good canter, have a great rhythm and teach the horse to rock back onto his hind-quarters.
