BlockBlock offers a chat application where the database is built on the blockchain using smart contracts. We exploit a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability along with an API endpoint that reflects the user’s authentication cookie to gain access to the admin’s account. From there, we determine how to make JSON-RPC calls against the local Ethereum instance and read the raw blocks of the blockchain to find a password that provides SSH access. The user can execute `forge` as another user, which we abuse in three different ways to gain execution and a shell as that second user. Finally, that user has permission to run `pacman`, the package manager for Arch Linux, as root, allowing us to escalate privileges and achieve full root access.
