About 50 miles south of Baghdad on the Euphrates River in what is now Iraq was the old city of Babylon. It was started around 2300 B.C. by people who spoke Akkadian and lived in southern Mesopotamia.

From 1792 to 1750 B.C., when Hammurabi was king of the Amorites, Babylon grew into a strong military power. After taking over nearby city-states, Hammurabi made most of southern and central Mesopotamia part of the Babylonian kingdom.

Hammurabi made Babylon a wealthy, strong, and important city-state. He wrote one of the first and most complete written sets of laws in the world. It was called the Hammurabi Code, and it helped Babylon beat up on other nearby towns. But, like many other cultures of the time, the ancient Babylonians did some troubling things.
