I am mother

I am mountain-woman.

I am nourisher, I am life giver
I am all you need right now.

I am the moon and the stars
I am everything to you.

I am your world.

For nine months we danced to the same rhythm,
My heartbeat, your metronome,
Constant and steady.

Somersaults, kicks and hiccups
I felt them all.

And as you bathed in my belly,
I sang to you,
My voice muffled by the oceanic symphonies of the womb.

I played you the music
I hoped that one day, earth-side, you would enjoy too.

The curved lines of my belly
I rubbed like Aladdin’s lantern,
Round and soft,
Imagining the day when we would meet.

And when that tidal pull of the moon
Ushered you in,
Nocturnal and luminous,
You dropped onto the bedroom floor,
Fragile and perfect.

And life
was never
the same
again.
