A sadistic couple who carried out a 'bloodthirsty' murder of a woman exchanged sickening messages about cannibalism and having sex covered in blood, a court heard. Convicted killer Steve Sansom, 45, was out of prison on life licence for the 1998 murder of a taxi driver when he killed Sarah Mayhew, 38, and dumped her remains in Rowdown Field, New Addington, in March last year.
Sansom and his partner Gemma Watts, 49, a mother of two children aged 12 and 15, were jailed for life on Thursday after confessing to the murder. The pair were also convicted of perverting the course of justice by dismembering Ms Mayhew's body, distributing the parts at 'various locations' and cleaning up the scene, the Old Bailey heard. Shocking CCTV footage played in court showed the duo buying tools and clean-up equipment for dismembering the victim's body following the murder. The clip shows Sansom using cash to buy a 300mm hacksaw, a 300mm blade and a 14-litre bucket at a hardware store on March 10 last year, two days after the murder, while Watts could be seen buying cleaning products from a retailer. The trial also heard evidence of Sansom and Watt's twisted and bloodthirsty fantasies in the lead-up to the murder and its aftermath. A deeply disturbing voice note was played in court from September 11, 2023, in which Sansom can be heard saying: 'Everyone looks like meat now, don't they? It's a play thing. Something to cut, something to bleed, they all look different now.' Watts replied: 'Wonder what they taste like, cooked flesh, maybe even rare so blood drips down our faces.' Sansom added: 'People taste like pork; consistency and texture are the same.' Other remarks by Watts included horrifying comments about dead babies. She said in a message: 'Why do I walk round now looking at people different, little kids look different, babies all people I see them and picture how they would look begging for life, or cute little clothes torn and little limbs covered in blood...twisted and broken.' She added that such images made her feel 'horny, powerful, hungry for it, different to everyone else.' In a voice note played to the court, Sansom says in response: 'I love how you are. I love how f***ed up we both are.' The Old Bailey also saw evidence of the pair discussing their sadomasochistic relationship, including a letter in which Watts absolved Sansom of any responsibility should she die in one of their violent sex games. The letter, sent on September 7 2023, said: 'I am writing this of my own free will. Should any serious injury, or even death occur whilst I am with Steven Samson let it be made fully understood that I enter the act of violent, dangerous sex games with Steven Samson of my own free will.' The 'games' included forcing his hand down her throat until she vomited, beating her with a wooden spoon and watching bestiality-themed pornography together. The messages also featured fantasies about the two having sex covered in blood and 'doomed romance' tropes of them dying together should they ever be apprehended. Ms Mayhew, who lived in New Addington on the outskirts of Croydon, joined Samson - whom she had met years before on a dating site - at his ground floor flat in Sutton at about 11pm on March 8 2024. Watts was already at the property.
The prosecution believe Ms Mayhew must have been killed or incapacitated inside Sansom's flat on the night of March 8 or March 9 2024. Given the messages sent between the defendants in the months before 'it is not credible to conclude that she was killed immediately,' the court was told.
Prosecutor Tom Little KC said: 'From that point in time she was never seen again and she never left that property alive.' It is not known how long Ms Mayhew was alive or precisely what happened to her body inside the house after being murdered, the court was told. Double killer Sansom later tried to justify what they had done, saying 'we're not evil, we done [sic] the world a service'. Mr Little said: 'Despite what had happened overnight, the defendant put on an appearance of relative normality on 9 March 2024.' Watts took the dog for a walk in the morning and neighbours saw them in the garden later and said they seemed 'chirpy'. The following day, March 10, Sansom went to B&Q in Sutton and purchased the items required for the sick pair to dispose of the body. #GemmaWatts #StevenSansom #SarahMayhew
