During World War II, RAF Takoradi played a significant role as a staging point for British aircraft bound for Egypt. Spitfire fighter planes were assembled here before deployment to the war in Libya.

The chief industries in Takoradi include timber, cocoa processing, plywood manufacturing, shipbuilding, railway repair, and more recently, crude oil production and refining.

Originally, Takoradi was the location of the Dutch Fort Witsen, established in 1665.

As of 2012, the population of the twin city Sekondi-Takoradi was recorded at 445,205, making it the largest Fante city and a significant industrial and commercial center in the region.
