Pre-Owned Speedmaster 321 Price: Approx $52,995

The Caliber 321 is a famous hand-wound mechanical chronograph movement, most noted as the first movement Omega ever used for the Speedmaster and as the movement that went to the Moon. It was initially discontinued in 1968 and was a sorely missed part of the brand’s catalog for many decades despite spawning numerous worthy variations, such as the calibers 861 and 1861.

That changed in 2019, when the caliber 321 triumphantly returned to the Omega catalog, more than 50 years after it last graced the brand’s portfolio. To do the original movement justice, Omega called on the help of renowned Swiss watchmakers, historians, craftsmen, and others. The result was an accurate and faithful reconstruction of the original caliber 321 for the modern era.

The shiny new-for-2019 movement was released exclusively in platinum under the ref. 311.93.42.30.99.001 featured in this week’s Watch in the Box Episode. While Omega has since extended the caliber 321 to other models, the initial release was for the true die-hards and other discerning collectors.
It’s an outstanding edition of the Speedmaster, befitting the release of such a historical caliber. The case is dressed entirely in a special platinum alloy that uses gold called (Pt950Au20). It has what many collectors call a “Sapphire Sandwich” case because there is a sapphire crystal on the front and back. This design allows the watch to properly showcase the Caliber 321 in all its Swiss watch glory.

Omega made the right choice in pairing the case with a leather strap. It balances out the heft of the platinum finish and gives the watch a very wearable aesthetic. The strap is made from non-grained alligator leather and holds secure via a platinum pin buckle.

Last but certainly not least is the black onyx dial, which has a sharp, rich luster and is decorated with 18k white gold hour markers and hands. The traditional chronograph registers are in their usual positions, only now they are formed from a genuine lunar meteorite, a fitting nod to the Speedy’s lunar exploration heritage.

True Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch models also feature a stepped dial and a Dot Over 90 bezel, both present on this featured platinum model. However, as a modern Omega, the bezel is outfitted with lustrous ceramic and features a white enamel tachymeter scale.
