The phrasing that hall of famer Johnny Bench was in the "driver's seat" of the Big Red Machine was interesting. Long before he appeared on the Cincinnati Reds roster, he had experienced tragic close calls on the highway traveling from high school, and minor league baseball games, respectively. With an accomplishment list longer than most biographies, the baseball community would serve itself well to never stop being thankful for the best catcher to ever do it. We almost never knew him.
