Description: Religious life takes place in Benares, sacred city among the sacred. Merchants sell their carnations in front of the Vishvanath, or "golden temple" as offerings, Hindus purify Shiva's lingam with the sacred water of the Ganges, devotees flock to the temple of the goddess Durga (warrior form of Parvati) populated by monkeys, while widows leave the temple dedicated to them on the ghats. Finally, as the crowd gathers to listen to the reading of the sacred texts, the sadhus meditate while the snake charmers hope to collect a room from the pilgrims.
