2. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Nancy Mace, (R) South Carolina:
“In this country, we have the First Amendment. We have freedom to speak what's on our mind and shouldn't get shot because we believe in our system of democracy. Conservative or liberal, whatever you are, you shouldn't be shot.”

++BLACK FRAMES++

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Nancy Mace, (R) South Carolina:
“(Reporter: But isn’t there a problem with political, political violence across the spectrum?) Yeah, we're talking about Charlie Kirk right now. That's the subject of this that we're talking about right now. Democrats own this 100%. And I'm not gonna let you, I'm not going to let you take the conversation somewhere else.”

++BLACK FRAMES++

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, (R) Florida:
“(Reporter: Deseret news is reporting the speaker of the Utah House has said that Charlie Kirk has died. And your reaction, your initial reaction?) I hope that that's wrong, but I would really hope that the speaker of the Arizona House is not speaking on… (Reporter: Utah House) Of the Utah House is not speaking before the family's been notified.”

++BLACK FRAMES++

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Ralph Norman, (R) South Carolina:
“People are trying to shut down free speech, making like, Charlie Kirk. There's no place in this society. This is what happens in third world countries.”

“I know Charlie pretty well. Charlie, he's come to my district. We text and talk about policy, you know, he was, ironically trying to engage with whatever you think of his views or my views. He was trying to engage in civil discourse on college campuses and invite people of opposing views. And it should go back and forth, have a debate.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Chip Roy, (R) Texas:
"We are able to debate and have dialogue and go to college campuses without fear, you know, this kind of, attack. But, Charlie, strong guy, he’s a good man. I hope, you know, pray for. I don't know the status. I have no idea. I keep getting conflicting reports. So pray for him and his family. He's got, you know, little baby.”

STORYLINE:
Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist and close ally of President Donald Trump, was shot and killed Wednesday during an event at a Utah college—an attack that has renewed concerns about political violence in the United States.

The Associated Press gathered immediate reactions from Republican lawmakers following the shooting.

“Just because you speak your mind on an issue doesn't mean you get shot, and killed," said Rep. Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina.

“I know Charlie pretty well. Charlie, he's come to my district. We text and talk about policy," said Rep. Roy Chip of Texas. "He was trying to engage in civil discourse on college campuses and invite people of opposing views and it should go back and forth, have a debate.”

The shooting comes amid a rise in politically motivated violence across the ideological spectrum in the United States.
