Panama expands another MPA; reaches over 50% protection of its entire marine area.

During the opening ceremony at Our Ocean Panama, the President of Panama Laurentino Cortizo and the Minister of Environment Milciades Concepción signed the decree to expand the size of the Banco Volcán marine protected area from roughly 14,000 sq km to more than 90,000 sq km, propelling the country’s total marine area under protection from 30% to more than 50% ocean protection.

The expansion will help accelerate regional collaboration to build a network of marine protected areas across the Caribbean Sea to safeguard the migration routes and habitats of many marine species, including some that are critically endangered. It will also aid in building resilience within marine ecosystems that support the livelihoods of coastal communities throughout the region.
