A perfectly shaped teacup can transform the tea experience - and in this video, I’ll show you exactly how I make one from start to finish.

I’m working with 175g of white local stoneware, rich in fine grog. It’s not the softest clay, but I love how it pairs with celadon crackle glaze. This cup is inspired by the gongfu tea tradition from China, where every curve, every touch point, and every detail matters.

When throwing, I focus on two crucial aspects:

A rounded base - essential for preventing splashes when pouring tea.

A comfortable lip - carefully smoothed so it feels perfect when it meets your lips.

The next day, at the leather-hard stage, I trim the foot ring with simple tools - no altering of form, just refining and removing excess clay.

Finally, I reveal the finished simple teacup in celadon crackle, a glaze that highlights the classic shape and subtle texture.
