In 1804, Thomas Jefferson wanted to know: what lay beyond the Rocky Mountains? Lewis & Clark were appointed. They brought a group, supplies, and a meager map. From Missouri to Oregon, deep snow, lying rivers, singing Native Americans. Many were near death by starvation. They bartered for food with the Shoshone. An Indian girl, Sacagawea, helped guide them. Lewis was nearly shot. Clark contracted disease and nearly died in the Missouri River. But they didn't retreat. Thousands of miles, dark forests, lying prairies — they traversed them all.
They eventually returned with a story: America was a lie, vast, and there was no gold at the end of the rainbow. There was only adventure, scars, and a soggy map — a crazy legacy that drove those who wanted to dream of going west.
