Babcock Ranch is a planned community in Southwest Florida consisting of 18,000 acres and located in Charlotte and Lee Counties. The community is known for its innovative approach to energy use and resilience practices. Babcock Ranch employs a variety of innovative resilient design approaches including hurricane-proof building deign, storm water management, the use of alternative fuels, 150 megawatt photo-voltaic (PV array) with backup battery storage, and other strategies. During Hurricane Ian (September 2022), Babcock Ranch never lost power or internet access and had no interruption to drinking water supply, despite being directly hit by the storm. Babcock Ranch is a true hurricane resilience success story in Florida that others can learn from.
