California introduces redistricting bill to gain House seats for Democrats

California lawmakers returned from recess today and introduced legislation that would allow the state to bypass its independent redistricting commission for the 2026 midterm elections. Backed by Governor Gavin Newsom, the proposal aims to redraw Congressional maps to give Democrats an advantage, directly countering Republican-led redistricting in Texas. The legislative package includes a November 4 special election to let voters decide whether to temporarily suspend the constitutional mandate for independent redistricting. Republicans strongly oppose the move, calling it undemocratic.
