(18 Jul 2019) President Donald Trump welcomed Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte to the White House Thursday.
In brief Oval Office remarks prior to their meetings, the two leaders said trade, security cooperation and job creation were the primary topics of discussion.
Rutte said in his last White House visit, he and Trump focused on "jobs and how to keep our citizens safe. And today we'll discuss how to accelerate the implementation all of that."
Trump was also asked about whether the United States has ruled out sanctions on Turkey following its decision to purchase the Russian S-400 air defense system.
Trump said his administration is looking at it and said it is a "very, very difficult situation for a lot of reasons," blaming the administration of former President Barack Obama.
"The previous administration made some very big mistakes with regard to Turkey and it was too bad. So we're looking at it, we'll see what we do. We haven't announced that yet," Trump said.
The president was also asked to clarify his remarks moments earlier that he was "not happy" with his supporters at a rally in North Carolina Wednesday night chanting "Send her back," in reference to Democratic Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, an immigrant from Somalia.
Trump said during this event that his supporters "are people that love our country. I want them to keep loving our country."
And he said it's the Democratic congresswomen who he has been calling out all week who "should be more positive than they are."
Trump also said his administration will "take a very long look" at a massive multibillion-dollar contract the Pentagon is about to award for a cloud computing system.
Amazon Web Services Inc., a division of Amazon, and Microsoft Corp. are finalists for the contract estimated to be worth as much as $10 billion over a decade.
Trump said he's been hearing "tremendous complaints" from other companies that the contract was not competitively bid, among other issues. Some Republican lawmakers also took their concerns about the Pentagon's handling of the contract directly to Trump.
Trump is a critic of Amazon, which is owned by Jeff Bezos. Bezos also owns The Washington Post, and Trump has criticized the paper's coverage of the administration.
