Tech layoffs 2024 are here. In the news you may hear about Google Layoffs 2024, Amazon layoffs 2024, and also Duolingo layoffs 2024. These layoffs were announced in the last week itself. The start of the new year with a new edition of Layoffs 2023 is not great. However, these tech layoffs 2024 may soon turn into massive layoffs across some business units. Corporate employees must know how to save their job during these tough tech layoffs 2024 and avoid massive layoffs in the future.

In this video, I talked about the trends in tech layoffs 2024. There are in specific 5 such trends that we can look out for. You can save your job by keeping these trends in mind and working on the layoffs 2024 red flags. In fears of recession 2024, most people are worried about losing their job. However if you keep these trends in mind you will notice that it is not the recession 2024 that is responsible for most of the job losses. On the contrary it is the recent development in tech and the business correction exercises taken up by these corporates that is leading to the tech layoffs 2024.

Layoffs in India and layoffs in USA follow a similar pattern. First, we can look at the Google Layoffs 2024. Google has announced that it will be laying off employees from the hardware and services teams. This is interesting because earlier the Google layoffs 2023 were focused on other trends. Amazon layoffs 2023 were announced a few months ago in Alexa which is another hardware product of Amazon. This is because the hardware products are very difficult to ship and they typically have much lesser margins. So, if you are in any of these hardware teams then massive layoffs 2024 may trouble you as well.

The next trend that you need to focus on is the acquisitions. Many acquisitions have gone wrong over the past few years. When Google talked about the layoffs in the hardware teams, it did not talk about the layoffs in the Google Pixel team but it did talk about layoffs in the Fitbit team. This was one of the acquisitions done by Google. Byju’s acquisitions have also not gone well. You can see that the overall valuation of Byju’s has also plummeted to only $1 Bn right now. If companies have started new initiatives in the past then those may also go a big change in the coming days.

The next red flag in the tech layoffs 2024 is contractual workers. Layoffs due to AI are a real thing right now. Duolingo believes that many of its content creation work that was earlier done by some of these contractual workers can now be taken over by generative AI. If you are in any of these contractual roles then you should try to become permanent at the company. Many layoffs in IT are triggered by the rise of generative AI. If you are wondering why so many tech layoffs are happening just right now then you need to pay attention to the growth of Generative AI and the impact it is having on the overall workforce of the modern world.

Indian tech layoffs also owe some credit to the rise of AI and companies like Paytm using it to justify some of their recent layoffs.

The next red flag you need to consider in tech layoffs in 2024 is the role of underperforming business units. These underperforming business units may get shut down all at once. This may not be related to your role or anything that you are doing at the company. It will simply be the case that the whole business unit gets replaced. Discord has also given a similar reason behind layoffs stating that they want to be more efficient. The next red flag is the cost centers like HR and R&D. Anytime there is a tough macroeconomic situation, the companies try to get rid of people working in the cost centers because it does not impact their overall revenues directly.
