On December 29, 1170, Archbishop Thomas Becket was brutally murdered inside Canterbury Cathedral by four knights loyal to King Henry II. Once close friends, the two men had engaged in a bitter power struggle regarding the Church’s independence from the English Crown.
After Becket excommunicated the King's supporters, an enraged Henry reportedly shouted, "Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?" Interpreting this as a direct order, the knights confronted Becket at the altar and hacked him to death during Vespers. The sacrilegious act shocked Medieval Europe, instantly transforming Becket into a martyr. He was canonized just three years later, making his shrine a premier pilgrimage destination
