"...ওসমান চাচা মুখে একটা আওয়াজ তুলে, গাছটার নীচে বসলো। এই সেই গাছ যা অনেক গোপন ইতিহাসের সাক্ষী হয়ে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে আজও, এই সেই গাছ যা বেশ কয়েকদিন ধরেই তাকে চুম্বকের মতো টানছে। মনের মধ্যে সর্বদা পাক খেয়ে চলেছে, সে কি জেগে উঠেছে আবার এত বছর পর? ওসমান চাচা যেন বাতাসে তার গায়ের গন্ধ পাচ্ছে ; ভীষণ বোঁটকা সেই গন্ধটা যেন ধোঁয়ার মত ঘিরে রেখেছে তাকে। একেকবার মনে হয়েছে মেহের বিবির কাছে সব উগরে দেওয়ার, কিন্তু পারেনি। ভয় পেয়েছে, যদি এত বছর পর জঘন্য ঘটনাটা জানাজানি হয়, মেহের তাকে ঘেন্না করবে..."
