The market is located near Tsukijishijo Station on the Toei Oedo Line and Tsukiji Station on the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line. There are two distinct sections to the market as a whole. The "inner market" (jōnai-shijō) is the licensed wholesale market, where approximately 900 wholesale traders operate small stalls and where auctions and most of the fish processing takes place. The "outer market" (jōgai-shijō) is a mix of wholesale and retail stores selling Japanese kitchenware, restaurant supplies, groceries, and seafood, and many restaurants, especially sushi restaurants. Most of the stores in the outer market close in the early afternoon, and those in the inner market even earlier.
