HOW TO BUY A GUN IN NEVADA
There are three steps to purchasing a firearm in Nevada.
Step one: Make sure you are legally allowed to possess a firearm. Common disqualifiers include having a felony or domestic violence conviction. The only way these people may restore their gun rights in Nevada is by getting a governor’s pardon. Some other people who may not have guns include fugitives, dishonorably discharged veterans, subjects of certain restraining orders, drug users, people adjudicated as mentally defective, and undocumented immigrants.
Step two: Pick out the gun you wish to buy from a licensed gun dealer. Or if this is a private sale, you and the seller must meet at a licensed gun dealer.
Step three: Fill out the ATF Form 4473, and the licensed dealer will then run a NICS background check, which takes just a few minutes. If the background check comes back as “approved,” you may go through with the purchase. If the background check comes back as “denied,” you may not buy the gun. If the background comes back as “delayed,” then you will get a final answer within three days. Note that CCW permit holders who buy from a licensed dealer have to fill out the ATF form but do not have to get the background check.
People who illegally buy guns face category B felony charges under NRS 202.360. Penalties include 1 to 6 years in Nevada State Prison and possibly up to $5,000 in fines.
