The Precinct Review: Get the buns and coffee ready. We're going on patrol in Averno!
When we were little, we used to imagine the patterns on the carpet as roads and buildings, and we used to drive our toy cars on them to create games. Now, there are even carpets prepared in this way for children. I think this is where our generation's fondness for isometric games comes from. We remember very well how excited we were when we saw the first generation GTA games. When everything went 3D later, it was as if that magic was lost. It would be a lie to say that we didn't wait to see if they would bring back the same style with modern graphics one day. We have good news for those who think like us. Although Rockstar didn't make it, the first GTAs are making a comeback with Fallen Tree Games.
The Precinct is a very entertaining game that preserves the perspective of the first Grand Theft Auto games, but this time takes the player to the side of the law enforcement. We take on the role of a police officer trying to stop crime in the ruthless city of Averno. We take the place of Nick Cordell, who graduated from the police academy, and try to discover what happened to our former police chief father, who was killed by a criminal gang that ravaged the city and disappeared almost overnight while patrolling the streets of the city.
The game offers us many different missions and many mysteries to discover, and has a very well-crafted detective atmosphere. It is perfect for fans of this type of series and especially 80s detective movies. The game perfectly reflects the spirit of that period. Before we turn on the sirens and enter the dangerous streets of Averno and start saving the city, let's take a look at the other details together.
The lighting is the first striking detail in the game. The light and shadow games, the changes between day and night in the city, when combined with other factors, contribute greatly to the desired 80s theme. Although the different neighborhoods of the city have their own unique characteristics, the design clearly reflects the period in which the story takes place. Fallen Tree Games should be commended in this regard.
There are various civilian and police vehicles designed in great detail from the period in the game. However, due to the camera angle and the limited zoom, these designs seem to have not been fully appreciated. The damages, especially on the sides of the vehicles, cannot be shown very well. A similar situation applies to bullet marks. Of course, this should be understood when the distance between the camera and the vehicles is taken into consideration.
In terms of music, the use of synthesizers, which marked the period, is also very common, which is another element that strengthens the perfect atmosphere. Of course, one always expects a wider repertoire of songs. A few more different songs would not be bad. In terms of sound effects, the voices on the radio, dialogues, patrol sirens of different types and combinations and some other elements are generally good, but there is a sense of rush in terms of other voice-overs.
In The Precinct, as Nick Cordell, we try to fulfill the tasks given to us by Sergeant Kowalsky in different shifts with our partner. The tasks are completely procedurally generated. Before each shift, we can choose one of the tasks assigned to these city areas, each with different characteristics. In some patrols, we may need to use a car or even a helicopter while on foot. As a result of solving different crimes; the player can earn experience points that can be used in a skill tree ranging from increasing their rank, purchasing new vehicles and more equipment, and improving some features of the patrol car to durability.
As you gain experience and fulfill certain objectives, the city map opens up and other types of missions become active. Following with a helicopter, controlling units on the ground, chasing cars that exceed the speed limit, stopping conflicts between rival gangs, walking patrols, stopping various crimes and even issuing tickets for parking violations are just some of the things we can do. Of course, how you will act against the crimes we will encounter is also determined by the rules.
As surprising as it may seem, as an American police officer, we should not use disproportionate force. For example, you cannot show the same reaction to someone carrying a deadly weapon as to someone throwing paper on the street. Otherwise, the game punishes you with negative experience points. There is also a routine that you must follow when arresting a criminal or interrogating a suspect. You need to go through a series of actions to check his criminal record, search him, and eventually, if there is a crime, report him and either fine him or arrest him, depending on the crime.
