Today I spoke with Nancy O'Brien Simpson, who grew up believing in Jesus, became the women's columnist for Jerry Falwell's Moral Majority, and was a co-founder of the Jericho Project, a pro-life group in Cincinnati. Nancy was a fervent evangelical Christian until the idea of a loving god eternally tormenting his children began to invade her faith and trouble her worldview, and she eventually deconverted.

As we talked through her story, we touched on many topics, including:

• Growing up with an extreme fear of hell.
• The experience of being "born again" and being "on fire for Jesus."
• Realizing the horrors of external conscious torment.
• How Christians are indoctrinated to not ultimately question the Yahweh character, and whether the narrative is actually real.
• Seeing much more love from unbelievers, and hatred from Christians.
• How the Yahweh character is portrayed in the Bible as being on a constant ego-trip, demanding total and unending worship to address his insecurity, including psychopathic requests
• How the Yahweh character is a brutal god of infanticide, genocide, and human sacrifice, stoning your children to death, etc.
• The fact that Passover is a celebration of killing children.
• Realizing, from a Trinitarian perspective, that Jesus commanded the same brutal violence as Yahweh, because he is equated to Yahweh.
• Realizing that if Yahweh were real, he would have foreseen every single brutality, abuse, and slaughter that would ever occur, and he could have stopped it, but chose not to, and arguably is ultimately behind it (“I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.”)
• How basic human love and forgiveness far exceeds the hatefulness and sadistic nature of the Yahweh character.
• The ways that Christianity darkens the human mind into a psychopathic worldview.
• Realizing that many Christians truly believe that even their own children deserve eternal conscious torment if they reject the Gospel.
• If you believe monstrous ideas long enough, you become a monster.
• The bizarre description of the Yahweh character delighting in the aroma of burning flesh.
• The joy and delight of escaping Christianity.
