This is the beginning of what could be the biggest undertaking in my fly fishing career... and that is to catch every trout native to the western US in their native range. It's called the Western Native Trout Challenge and it's going to take me a while to complete it. But it will undoubtedly be one of the coolest and most difficult challenges on YouTube, so enjoy!

That creek was one of the coolest creeks I’ve ever explored, but for whatever reason the brown trout dominated that stream. I later did some research and confirmed that there were some rio grande cutthroat in there, but they were clearly being out competed. Non native species like the brown trout, rainbow trout, and brook trout are one of the many reasons why a lot of these native species are threatened or even endangered in their native ranges. We finally bailed on that creek and decided to try something different in the hopes of finally finding what we were looking for.

After I caught that stud of a rio grande cutthroat out of that tiny stream Micah also landed a good one after crawling out on a log. I wish I had the footage of him catching it but my camera battery was dying so I was trying to use it sparingly. We both ended up catching some awesome fish in that second creek, and after landing two nice fish in back to back holes we called it a day. The hike out was miserable to say the least, especially since there wasn’t a trail on that creek. Which meant we were bushwhacking for our lives a few times and had more than a few sections of sketchy rock we had to figure out how to get around. But after knocking off the Rio Grande Cutthroat from the list we out our sights on arguably one of the most famous trout in the US with one of the more impressive conservation stories… the Apache Trout.
