Welcome to my Winds-Advent-Calender 2025!
Today, probably one of the most famous pieces of music ever!
Very often connected with wedding ceremonies, honey and sugar, and maybe a bit too often played, and not always really listened to.
But...we love it anyway!
Johann Pachelbel (1653–1706) was a German composer and organist of the late 17th century, active before Johann Sebastian Bach.
In his own time, he was mainly known as a respected church musician and teacher (he even taught J. S. Bach’s older brother), not as the composer of a single “hit”.
The famous Canon in D major, probably written around 1680–1690, was originally scored for three violins and basso continuo and is actually only the first part of a larger work: Canon et Gigue in D major.
Its magic lies in its simplicity: three voices enter one after another over a repeating bass line that never changes, creating a calm, circular and almost hypnotic flow.
In the early 1680s, Pachelbel lost his first wife and a young son, most likely during a plague outbreak. These personal tragedies deeply marked his life.
His music from this period often shows an even stronger sense of restraint, balance and inward focus. Never dramatic, but quietly aware of loss and fragility.
Interestingly, the Canon became truly popular only in the 20th century, thanks to recordings, films, advertising and yes, weddings.
Its harmonic progression has since become one of the most reused patterns in modern music and can be heard, in different forms, in many pop and rock songs, such as: With or Without You (U2), Don’t Look Back in Anger (Oasis), Go West (Pet Shop Boys), Maroon 5 – Memories and many others.
More than a cliché, the Canon in D is the work of a composer who mastered balance, simplicity, clarity and musical architecture.
Maybe that’s why this music still speaks to us today.
Many thanks to my love on the cello, for being so beautifully ostinato 🙂
We play a version for recorder, which is in F major instead of D major.
This year’s ADVENTure is almost over, but the Winds-Advent-Calendar playlist will be waiting for you on YouTube, anytime you feel like listening! ✨
