Good morning! Happy Monday! Tomorrow is the Valentine’s day, and I wanted to make a video that will be somehow connected to it. For the Valentine’s day people sometimes give flowers to their loved ones, so today I would like to share with you some “flower” idioms. This video is “2 in 1”, because not only will you learn the idioms with flowers, if you don’t know the names of some flowers, you will learn them as well. Take a look at this flower, for example. In English, it is called “a lily”, and the idiom with this flower is ‘to gild the lily”. To gild in itself means to put a thin layer of gold on something, for example, you can have a gilded candlestick or a gilded chandelier. But “to gild a lily” means to try to improve something that is already perfect. For example, “This pie is perfect, you don’t need to gild the lily by putting whipped cream on it.”
This purple flower’s name is violet, easy to remember. The idiom with violet is “to be a shrinking violet”. Maybe I should explain the word “to shrink”. To shrink means to get smaller, sometimes you wash your clothes in the washing machine and they shrink, they become smaller. But the idiom “to be a shrinking violet” has nothing to do with changing sizes, that is the way to describe a very shy and introverted person. You can say, “My cousin is a shrinking violet, she rarely talks to anyone.”
Next flower is a clover. They can be white or red and the four-leaf clover is considered a sign of luck. The idiom with this flower is “in clover” and it means a life or luxury and comfort. You can say, “She lived her whole life in clover, rich and successful.”
My next idiom is about a daisy, a beautiful flower that you can see on the fields or on the meadows. But the idiom with this flower is rather sad. To be pushing up daisies means to be dead. For example, “My grandfather is pushing daisies”.
This flower I bet many of you know, a rose. But maybe not many of you know the meaning of the idiom “to come out smelling like a rose”. It means that after going through a difficult situation you come out victorious in spite of any opposition. One example could be, “After their financial problems, they came out smelling like a rose.”
I’ll stop here. My wish for you that this week you will be in clover and if you have a problem, to come out smelling like a rose. Have a great day and remember to show your love and appreciation to people you love not only on the Valentine’s day, but every day of the year. Still, happy Valentine’s day! Bye-bye!
