Once the Dark Templar no longer represented a threat, the Zerg Swarm was ready to travel through space-time to Aiur, the Homeworld of the Protoss. Kerrigan stayed behind with a Zerg Brood to keep hunting down the Protoss on Char, but the player Cerebrate, Daggoth and the Overmind itself were preparing themselves to invade Aiur and assimilate the Protoss, in order to achieve "perfection" for the Zerg. However, the invasion wasn't just about storming the planet and slaying every Protoss in the way; instead, some preparations had to be done to ensure a correct assimilation of this alien species. The first step consisted of harvesting the "Khaydarin Crystal", which was the source of the Protoss psionic power. It was the player Cerebrate's task to escort a Drone to collect this crystal from the Khaydarin Formation and take the crystal to the Hive Cluster.
