Opened in 1929, the Airdock is home to Lockheed Martin Mission Systems and Sensors' Lighter-than-Air programs. The Airdock features 364,000 square feet of unobstructed floor space -- an area equivalent to eight football fields lined up side by side.

Today, the Airdock is practically full of helium-filled "envelopes" for the company's High Altitude Long Endurance -- Demonstrator (HALE-D) and Persistent Threat Detection System (PTDS). These aren't ordinary "envelopes". Each aerostat for the PTDS measures 115 feet long -- larger than a professional basketball court, while the HALE-D "envelope" is more than twice as long at 240 feet.

The HALE-D is a proof of concept for the U.S. Army's Space and Missile Defense Command's High Altitude Airship (HAA) program. HAA is an unmanned, untethered, lighter-than-air vehicle that will operate autonomously in the stratosphere. It is designed to operate for sustained, months-long missions as a stable, geostationary platform suitable for multi-mission sensor operations. HALE-D will demonstrate the feasibility of controlled high altitude lighter-than-air flight (at 60,000 feet) while carrying a payload for two weeks.
