Ruby-throated Hummingbirds visit Marietta, Georgia! Photos and videos of hummers!

in this reel we share some photos and videos of our teeniest tiniest feathered friends. They are starting to get pretty plump as they prepare to migrate thousands of miles across the Gulf of Mexico down to Central America. We have it easy, we jump on a plane and level off at 34,000ft above sea level. These birds are so small, they only average around 24mph and a strong wind can cause them to only fly forward at a few measly miles per hour, or even cause them to go backwards! They can't take a break halfway across the Gulf either! Isn't it amazing how nature works?!

We likely have only a few weeks before the Males will take off and start their journey. They go first, and then the females and the juveniles will go next. From past years, it seems like they will spend 2-4 more weeks at our feeders before leaving too.

Do NOT buy store bought red colored food dye and feed the birds with this. It is super easy to make your own nectar with just 4 parts water, and one part sugar. Bring it to a boil and then make sure to stir all the sugar so that it dissolves. Allow it to cool down to room temperature before serving to your birdie friends!

when it's hot 🔥 outside you absolutely NEED to change the Hummer nectar out more often. When temps are in the 90's here, well replace the nectar ever 2-3 days. (2 if it's in the sun).
