One of our readers has a spouse and she is working in the living room. But he has this recliner that he always sits in. And it's got this, I don't know, a moat that keeps his cluttered pile from the rest of the room that she's cleaning out. And she doesn't know what to do with that space.

Okay, you have two options when it comes to your spouse or partner's space that is uncluttered in a room that you want to now have neat and organized.

Number one, you can do. And I've done both of these. So I am experienced under both of these options. Number one, you could do it without permission. Yes, it's a quick win, because you clean that hot mess of an area out and it now matches the rest of the room neat, tidy and clutter free. However, it has for me, and it will for you cause a huge fight or at the very least an argument. And it only made things worse, because I touched his stuff. Even if I didn't remove it. I just relocated, it doesn't matter. I touched his stuff, I touched his organizing system of his hot mess of piles. And that, in turn, caused a trust issue with us both. So I did that only one time. Yes, it was a quick one for me. But it was a huge frustration for him. And that wasn't fair to him.

The other option is to just let it go. No, a very slow win, especially for me because I just let his areas go. And I'd have this neat and beautiful space and his hot mess over there, his hot area over there or his hot room over there. And it was frustrating for me. However, as he saw the rest of the house start to take shape. As a neat and organized space. He got on board without me asking all by himself, he started decluttering his things.

Now he still has some messy, messy tendencies and habits. But I've learned to not look at them and to just focus on what is neat and clean in the room. So if that happens, you have somebody that is still messy and you want to move on to organized and not cluttered, you have to let them catch up at their own pace. It's not going to be enjoyable for you in the beginning, but it is going to be a win in the long run especially when they do catch up and they get on the decluttering and organizing bag bandwagon all on their own.

It's going to be a bigger win for you in the end and you will both become a united front. So just go ahead and let them go. Organize your areas do not touch their things and hopefully they will see the light and start decluttering on their own until they catch up to you.
