The Old Terrace Motel, once an iconic landmark in Ellenville, has fallen into disrepair and has become an eyesore in the community.  On Tuesday morning, the building was being demolished after it was condemned by village officials. 

Phillip Mattracion, a longtime Ellenville resident who serves as both the Chief of Police and President of the Ellenville School Board, has fond memories of the motel.​

"The Terrace Motel was here for as long as I've been here since 1987, it was a local icon," he said.  "It was back in the ​'80s and '90s when it was​ a thriving business.​"

​The heydays of the Borscht Belt era are long gone and the motel represented one of its relics​

​"It was the first thing people saw when they came into the village and it gave people a bad impression," he said.  ​"A part of history goes out, but a new history is formed.  After the building is torn down and something new takes its place, it will make a better impression on travelers."
