I found this song in 'Songs of Old Hampshire' Edited by Paddy Browne. I only needed to change one chord in the song at Line 4 when I felt the piece wanted to stay in the new key of A for one more line. In the text it says the last line should be spoken but speech in songs is not a strength of mine as it requires acting skills so I decided to just invent a melody for that part. Musically I enjoyed arranging this one mixing a Military feel with Brass and a bit of rock thrown in. Not sure what style it has ended up in . There are other settings of these lyrics albeit it in various forms and various other contemporary versions as The Battle of Trafalgar is a great theme for a song whether triumphant or sad.Of course in this day and age it is probably politically incorrect but I'm sure Bob and The French are forgiving especially as yet again they have been victorious in Sport with The Ladies winning the game in the Women's World Cup 2015. Well done to France and here in England we can keep digging up the past until we have another sporting Victory. Rather that than another useless war. May Peace and Friendship remain between all nations.
My Birthday incidentally was October 21st and I've always been surprised i wasn't called Nelson especially as my Mum was a Nelson Eddy Fan so all the pointers were there. Nelson Adamson could be a stage name I suppose. Of course if truth be known my parents being traditional Catholics named me after the nearest Saints Day which at the time was Peter of Alcantara on the 19th of October. Never heard of a Saint Nelson so that's out of the question.
