King Cash up for a Vote - Cashless society & Central Bank Digital Currency Taking Over
A country will open a vote on whether to add an amendment on the currency laws of the nation. The vote will concern whether the country will ever get rid of physical banknotes and coins - in essence, providing a guarantee of cash for it's citizens for the future. A group triggered a democratic popular vote in the matter after passing the 100,000 signature threshold. Switzerland seems to have a long history of using cash, and now it's citizens may have a say. With the digital euro coming up for a vote this year on use of central bank digital currencies - the Swiss stand alone it seems. Culturally, and unlike their neighbors, cash usage remains very high, despite increasing push towards cashless. CBDCs are getting studies and pilot programs all over the west, so it seems that there are plenty of governmental interest in laying the groundwork for digital money in the coming years.
On an interesting note - the vice chairperson of the Swiss National Bank, gave an impassioned speech in defense of cash. He championed the continued use of cash for a variety of reasons - and this also highlights how the country's cash culture runs deep even into the central banks.

In the United States, a congressman is pushing a bill that would prohibit the Fed Reserve from ever issuing a CBDC to individuals. He claims this is to prevent a surveillance state, and to avoid any sort of privacy issues - a la China. But, the Fed Reserve does not currently even issue cash or any form of money to individuals as is. Therefore, it appears to me this is all for show - or possibly to garner attention. The projected aim of the bill is a noble one - but it does appear that the small political power this congressman has against the Fed Reserve would render this bill nothing more than a publicity stunt. As the Fed Reserve is tasked with managing interest rates and money supply- not issuing money to individuals - the bill's main purpose is already rendered null & void. The money supply management of the economy is substantially different than the aim of the bill, as it is worded. Money printing is from the US treasury - it is a surprise that this bill is worded as such.
