New edit of live footage of Happy Mondays, smashing out a raucous Do It Better, at Dingwalls in London, in 1988.
Uploaded on the 16 July 2022, upon hearing of the tragic death of Mondays bassist, Paul Ryder, who was only 58 years old.

Bummed, to quote the BBC’s Daryl Easlea, “represented something of a great leap forward for the Happy Mondays. The shambolic monotony of their John Cale-produced debut (album)… was replaced by well, a Martin Hannett-produced shambolic monotony.”
Happy Mondays were a band formed in Manchester in 1980. During their early years, despite being on Factory Records, and apparently part of the alternative music scene, the band were perhaps misunderstood by many fans of the genre. The loose funk grooves of early records, like Freaky Dancin’, and it’s hooligan poetry, “You don’t like that face ‘cos the bones stick out, you don’t like that mouth ‘cos it’s much too loud”, and the Manchester Football Casuals image of the group, were unusual and unpalatable to some.
However, by the time of 1988’s Bummed, Happy Mondays had lucked onto the second summer of love moment. Despite the album being somewhat guitar-based Indie, the Can/Funkadelic/Northern Soul-esque grooves, the attitude, the clothes and the pills meant they were the right band in the right place, at the right time, bridging the gap between alternative rock and the emerging Rave scene.

The live footage we have here was shot at a Mondays gig at Dingwalls in Camden, North London, on 28 November 1988. The show was immediately after the Factory Records launch party for the Bummed album, which was held at the Heaven club in Charing Cross, London. The brief scenes at the end of this video are from that launch party.

Chancing on the Granada TV "Information Technology" video featuring the Mondays, was a eureka moment for me. I’ve loved Bummed-era Mondays especially, since back in the day. A few years ago, I utilised the clips of Hannett, Ryder and co in the studio, recording the album in ’88, for my Moving In With video: • Happy Mondays | Moving In With | 1988 .
I’ve been tinkering with this second video, of live footage, from the Information Technology show ever since. Hearing today about Mondays bassist Paul Ryder having just passed away, it seems a timely moment to quickly finish the thing and upload it.
It’s rough and ready - if you’re not a Mondays fan, in all likelihood you won’t dig it. But for me, they were a special band at a special time and, as can be seen here, the shows were mental!
RIP Paul Ryder, 24 April 1964 – 15 July 2022.
