Banteay Srei Temple I Angkor Park I Exploring the temples in Siem Reap I Attraction in Siem Reap

Banteay Srei is just over 20km from the main Angkor complex, so about 30km from Siem Reap town. You can get there by going through the Angkor Park and then north along Road 67 or you can take Route 6 towards the Roluos Group and then turn north down Road 66.

The modern name “Banteay Srei” was given to the temple because the beautiful intricate carvings; the name means the “citadel of the women”, which comes from the belief that the carvings are so delicate that they could only have been done by the hands of a woman.

Although a bit further out, Banteay Srei is a popular temple on the tourist trail, and for good reason. The beautiful carvings, the unique style, and the fact that it can be combined with so many tours, makes it a popular choice for visitors.

It’s best to visit this temple during the cooler times of day, which can also give you the opportunity for some stunning photos of the pink-coloured temple in the changing light.

This temple wasn’t rediscovered until the 1930s. Hidden in the jungle, the temple has avoided a lot of the weather damage that you will see on most of the temples. Indeed, some of the carvings look like they could have been finished yesterday.
