How To Dye Yarn - Speckles

First off! I want to apologize for the horrible cutting off of my head later on in the video! When I pre-set the camera is was fine but once I pressed that record button it decided to do something different :(

WEAR A MASK I did not wear a mask because I needed to explain the process to you guys. I highly recommend you wear a mask when dealing with dyes. Mask recommendation: N95 Dust mask. Thank you.

Anywho! I decided to share my method of how I speckle yarn along with many other methods. Below I will write step by step instructions on how to make speckles if I went too fast in the video :)

Equipment:
-Stainless Steel Steam Pan & Lid can be found @ www.webstaurantstore.com
-Latex Gloves
-Dharma Dye Powder
-N95 Mask to prevent inhalation of powder
-Dharma Citric Acid
-Syringe
-Strainer
-Plastic fork & spoon
-Plastic bags that can be found at Walmart
-Cotton String
-Steamer
-Cooking Pot

Instructions:
-Pre Soak your skein with water and citric acid for about 30 minutes
-Use a cotton string and tie it around the skein so that you can grab it easily later on
-For me, I used two medium dunkin donut cups into each pan. 1 dunkin cup = 2 cups of water
-Add two skeins
-IF YOU JUST HAVE ONE SKEIN: add about a cup and maybe some more, depending on how much water is in the pan
-Have the heat on low and wait until the water starts to steam
-With the color choice #1 lightly add into the strainer and tap around the skein. The lighter you tap the lighter the speckles will be.
-Using the spoon method, add as little onto the spoon and use your finger / wrist to swoosh the dye around, lol. Do this for every color
-Let it sit in the pan for 25 minutes covered

For hand speckle, mix up your dyes and flick, syringe, brush, or use the fork to spread around those colors onto the skein.
-Once done, put the skein into a plastic bag and tie it.
-With your pot and steamer, add the water at the point just under the steamer base.
-Turn heat on in between medium and low setting, getting the water to just simmer, not boil.
-Add bag on top of steamer and steam for 25 minutes

-Once the timer has ran out, let the skein cool down to room temperature, allowing any dye left over to still have a chance to be absorbed into the skein
-Once cooled, grab the cotton string and rinse out, making sure it isn't bleeding
-Hang up to dry and enjoy!
