When object accelerates, it creates ripples in space-time, gravitational waves. Similarly, when two black holes orbit each other, they radiate their orbital energy in the form of gravitational waves, coming closer and closer, until they finally merge into one. The closer they approaches each other, the faster they orbit and the more they emit gravitational waves. At the instant they merge, they release energy more than 50 times the energy released by all the stars in the universe combined. The emitted gravitational waves sweep across the universe, bending the space-time in their way. When they reach Earth, the Earth gets stretched and contracted in the following way, although it has been highly exaggerated here. These subtle expansions and contractions can be detected by LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory). The data is then converted to audible sound waves accordingly.
