One Sherman costs about $150,000 to make so a lot of money was spent on this tank so really they could have upgraded there tank but they never did, but then the British made a Sherman firefly with a 76mm cannon with 76mm anti-tank shells.
In 1943 the first American Sherman (M4) Was then upgraded with a better turret, hull, cannon and better engine than before this was known as the M4 Jumbo a more attack instead of defensive role. But then in 1945 The M4's got a better upgrade then they called it the M4A8 a Jumbo with less armour and a better gun this gun was a 85mm cannon with 85mm anti-tank warhead this was one step away from the legendary sabot rounds. Late 1945 almost at the end of the war closing up to D-day the Americans wanted a tank that could shoot very far away from there targets so there is less chance of detection this was going to be known as a M26 Pershing a very good gun and very good armour but this didn't count as a M4.
