Border patrol and other law enforcement agencies believe there are as many as 250 illegal cannabis growing operations in Maine, generating billions in revenue.

Most are in homes or barns in rural parts of the state, making it a challenge for police to locate them.

High electric bills at these illegal grow houses may be the key to tracking them down. The Maine Public Utilities Commission will soon consider a proposal to authorize Central Maine Power and other electric companies to point law enforcement in the direction of illegal marijuana growing operations.
