Punta Arenas (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈpunta aˈɾenas]; historically Sandy Point in English) is the capital city of Chile's southernmost region, Magallanes and Antarctica Chilena. The city was officially renamed Magallanes in 1927, but in 1938 it was changed back to "Punta Arenas". It is the largest city south of the 46th parallel south and at the same time the most populous southernmost city in Chile and in the Americas, and due to its location, the coldest coastal city with more than 100,000 inhabitants in Latin America. It is one of the most southerly ports in the world, serving as an Antarctic gateway city.
As of 1977, Punta Arenas has been one of only two free ports in Chile, the other one being Iquique, in the country's far north.
Located on the Brunswick Peninsula north of the Strait of Magellan, Punta Arenas was originally established by the Chilean government in 1848 as a tiny penal colony to assert sovereignty over the Strait. During the remainder of the 1800s, Punta Arenas grew in size and importance due to the increasing maritime traffic and trade travelling to the west coasts of South and North America. This period of growth also resulted from the waves of European immigrants, mainly from Croatia and Russia, attracted to a gold rush and sheep farming boom in the 1880s and early 1900s. The largest sheep company, controlling 10,000 square kilometres in Chile and Argentina, was based in Punta Arenas, and its owners lived there.
Since its founding Chile has used Punta Arenas as a base to defend its sovereignty claims in the southernmost part of South America. This led, among other things, to the Strait of Magellan being recognized as Chilean territory in the Boundary treaty of 1881 between Chile and Argentina. The geopolitical importance of Punta Arenas has remained high in the 20th and 21st centuries because of its logistic importance in accessing the Antarctic Peninsula.
Since 2017, the city and its region have had their own time zone: they use summertime during the whole year (UTC−3). The city is supplied with water from the San Juan River.[5]

Punta Arenas es una comuna, ciudad y puerto interoceánico de la Zona Austral de Chile. Es la capital de la Provincia de Magallanes, de la Región de Magallanes y de la Antártica Chilena y, en forma no oficial, de la llamada "Patagonia chilena".2 Fue fundada por militares chilenos el día 18 de diciembre de 1848 como asiento principal del Territorio de Magallanes y como colonia penal. Está localizada en la zona que la cartografía británica había bautizado como Sandy Point, lugar elegido por el fácil acceso al agua dulce y carbón y del cual deriva su actual nombre, específicamente entre el Río del Carbón (actual Río de las Minas) por el norte y del Río de la Mano hacia el sur, bajo la ladera del Cerro de las Siembras (actual Cerro de la Cruz), situándose así sobre la costa oriental de la Península de Brunswick, en la ribera continental del Estrecho de Magallanes y a pocos kilómetros del Cabo Froward, el punto más austral de toda la masa continental de América.
La ubicación geográfica de la ciudad la convierte en un punto estratégico, tanto en lo político como en lo histórico, turístico, geopolítico y económico. Junto con Coyhaique, son las únicas dos capitales regionales de Chile ubicadas al este de la Cordillera de los Andes, siendo la única capital regional de Chile que tiene amaneceres por el mar y atardeceres hacia la cordillera.
La ciudad se proyecta como puerta de entrada mundial al continente antártico, ya que más de 15 países ocupan la ciudad como puerto base y al menos 25 países solicitan sus servicios antárticos.
Punta Arenas se encuentra localizada entre las dos reservas de agua dulce más grandes del mundo, la Antártida y los Campos de Hielo Sur.
Punta Arenas se encuentra en la comuna homónima, que pertenece al Distrito Electoral N.° 28 y a la 16.ª Circunscripción Senatorial (Magallanes).
Antes de la apertura del Canal de Panamá en 1914, era el principal puerto en la navegación entre los océanos Pacífico y Atlántico por su ubicación en el estrecho de Magallanes, circunstancia que explica su época de oro, que la hizo un gran centro cosmopolita y comercial en el extremo austral de Sudamérica. Ello ha incidido en el carácter europeo del centro de la ciudad, que muestra una arquitectura y cultura sobresaliente.
Punta Arenas es la ciudad más poblada y cosmopolita de la Patagonia Austral. Actualmente se posiciona como una de las capitales regionales con un mayor índice de calidad de vida y posee la segunda renta per cápita más alta del país.3
