1st visit to Manchester Oxford Road on a Wet / Dry lunchtime

Featuring services from Northern, Transpennine Express, East Midlands Railway and Transport For Wales

Manchester Oxford Road first opened in July 1849 although the present layout dates from a rebuild in 1960.

The location of the station sits on the viaduct formerly built by the original Manchester, South Junction and Altrincham Railway having originally opened in 1839.

There are 5 platforms here with Platforms 1 to 4 being through Platforms whilst Platform 5 is used by terminating Northern services from Liverpool Lime Street via Warrington Central and Southport via Wigan Wallgate.

A mixture of services with Northern electric services nowadays provided by Class 331s to and from Manchester Airport to Liverpool Lime Street via Newton-le-Willows which joins up with the Chat Moss Line East of Eccles and Blackpool North services which run via Bolton which joins up with the West Coast Main Line south of Euxton Balshaw Lane.

Class 195s operate hourly services alternatively to Windermere and Barrow-in-Furness

East Midlands Railway and Transpennine Express DMU services operate via Warrington Central via the Mid Cheshire Committee Line which diverges North of Deansgate which is only electrified as far as just before Trafford Park station originate to and from Liverpool Lime Street to destinations such as Sheffield, Nottingham and Norwich for EMR whilst TPE operate to Cleethorpes via Sheffield, Huddersfield and Leeds.

The electric Transpennine Express services are provided by Class 397s and occasionally Class 802 Novas which operate alternatively to and from Manchester Airport to Edinburgh and Glasgow Central respectively

Transport For Wales provide hourly services to and from Llandudno via Newton-le-Willows, Warrington Bank Quay and Chester which nowadays operated by Class 197s.

There are plans to remove the remaining Bay Platform via Platform 5 as part of the Northern Hub plan however so far it hasn't been proceeded despite the ongoing problems of congestion on the route and in some ways come rain or shine sometimes delays can be inevitable
